3 reasons Munich is cool

So I have a confession: I went to Munich once with my work and hated it, so I said I'd never go back. My hatred stemmed from speaking German (which I was learning at the time and was too hard for me), a girl I was having a fling with, and some German guys in a nightclub who wouldn't leave said girl alone. There also may have been a lot of Grey Goose vodka involved.

But I digress. I vowed never to return to Munich and yet, when my friends invited me to join them for a Christmas shopping trip last weekend, I decided to go. Yes, we were staying in a hostel and I categorically do not enjoy staying in hostels. I actively avoid them. But this one wasn't too bad, and it was very central so we could get into town really easily by foot.

And then, across the two days we were there, I came to realise that Munich and the people that live there are actually really cool. Behind Cologne, it's now my favourite city in Germany.

Here's why:

1 - Everyone dresses like they're from the mid-1990s

I went to Munich in search of a fleece-lined denim jacket and not only did I find it (see image below), but I also came across some of the most awesomely retro 90s outfits being worn by regular young people. Some of them even had peroxide-blonde hair like something from a Blink 182 video. The jacket is from Levis via Urban Outfitters and is completely awesome. Get it here.

I've never looked so 90s, and I love it

2 - People aren't afraid to rock a terrible hairstyle

We went to a Christmas market in the centre of town and I kid you not, a woman had a haircut that looked like something Jon Bon Jovi had in 1989. I'm deadly serious. The fact that this woman even found someone who accepted money in exchange for cutting her hair this way is incredible.

3 - It's kind of like Zurich, but not as unfriendly

Look, I love living in Switzerland and it's basically my second home - but the people are about as cold and uninviting as the architecture (and the weather in winter). Munich seems like it's got all the expensive taste of Zurich but without the pretentious attitude. Well done, Munich. I now like you again.
